Wifi Body Independent Contemporary Dance Festival 2012

Yay! My article on the 2012 Wifi Body Independent Contemporary Dance Festival was finally published in Philippine Daily Inquirer's July 9, 2012 issue.  The festival started on July 4 and I submitted the piece for the July 2 issue but they didn't have enough space to run the piece then. All's well that end's well, they used it for this week's issue.

The published version, both in print and online, is a slightly different version from the one below as I had to convert some of the information into past tense.

Wifi Body Independent Contemporary Dance Festival 2012
By Walter Ang

Performance from previous Wifi Body
Independent Contemporary Dance Festival
The sixth Wifi Body Independent Contemporary Dance Festival will be held in two cities across Metro Manila: Dance Forum Space (DFS) and University of the Philippines (UP) in Quezon City and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in Pasay City.

The festival gathers contemporary dance artists and audiences in a series of performances, workshops and competitions.  This year will also feature a conference for dance scholars.

The festival is organized by Contemporary Dance Network Manila, a group of contemporary dance companies, artists, school-based organizations, critics and institutions promoting contemporary dance in the Philippines.

"This year's theme is 'Aspire for Dance, Aspire to Dance.'," says network chair Angela Lawenko-Baguilat. Baguilat is also festival artistic director, taking over from founding artistic director Myra Beltran.

The name of the festival was created based on the notion of "engaging the public, especially younger audiences, weaned in a digital age. Wifi Body allows everyone to access contemporary dance," she says.

Performances
The festival opens with an opening gala, "New Aspirations," at DFS on July 4, featuring performances by Airdance, Chameleon Dance Theater, E-Dance, UP Dance Company, and Lyceum of the Philippines University.

The festival's "IndepenDance" show, focusing on new works, features choreographies by Jed Amihan, Rudolph Segundo ,Jun Saagundo,Ea Torrado in its July 6 DFS show and the works of Elena Laniog, and Christine Crame in its July 13 CCP show.

The festival closes on July 14 with closing gala "Fidelity" at Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino in CCP, with performances from Steps Dance Studio, Seven Dance Company, Philippine Ballet Theater, and Ballet Philippines.

Competition
The festival has a New Choreographers Competition that allows up-and-coming regional choreographers and dancers who have not yet created any major full-length work to premiere solos or duets.

The semi-finals will be held at DFS July 5 and finals at CCP July 14.

"To reinforce the focus on choreography, no set pieces are allowed to enable audiences and judges to experience the emphasis on the level of dance research in theme, aesthetics, process and its innovative application."

On screen, online, on site
The festival is hosting its third Uncensored Bodies Dance Video Competition to encourage the use of dance in film or the creation of film specifically about dance.

Selected entries will be screened at UP College of Music Mini-Hall and CCP.  The winners of the competition will be announced on July 14.

"Finalist entries will also be uploaded on Youtube so that the Audience Choice Award can be determined via online voting."

There will also be the festival's Dance-on-Site series, performances that are created for non-stage venues or areas.  Previous installments have been performed on escalators, roof decks and driveway ramps of CCP. This year's performances will be held at the lobby of CCP's Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino.

Workshops, conferences
Dance workshops and a conference open to the public will be held at UP.  "UP College of Music has been home to the premiere dance program in the country, nurturing and producing dance leaders for over three decades," says Baguilat, faculty-in-charge of the dance program.

The Wifi Body Conference will be held from July 5-6 at the UP College of Music Mini-Hall with keynote address to be delivered by Basilio Esteban Villaruz, professor emeritus at UP and author of "Walking Through Philippine Theater" (University of Santo Tomas Publishing House, 2012), a three-volume collection of his dance and theater critiques.

"The conference aims to unearth what current dance makers are aspiring to and aspiring for in creating and understanding their art. It will be a platform for dance scholars and practitioners to raise and exchange prevailing issues and concerns of contemporary dance practice."

Papers will be presented by Jose Jay Cruz, Transitopia Contemporary Dance Commune artistic director; Donna Miranda, choreographer and critic; Noel Garovillo, Noel Garovillo Dance Center artistic director, Koronadal; Cher Anabo, freelance visual and kinetic artist, Honolulu; Clarissa Cecilia Mijares, critic and Airdance artist; Joelle Jacinto, critic and Team Dance Studio artist.

Contemporary Dance Workshops will be at the UP Dance Studio July 4-6.  Workshops will be conducted by Donna Miranda, Raul Alcoseba and Gerald Mercado.

Wifi Body Independent Contemporary Dance Festival 6 (2012) runs July 4-6 and July 13-14. Festival passes, day passes and student/senior discounts available. Contact 0917-328-2582 or 0999-881-6800.

Musicals about girls from London: Viva Forever and Matilda

[Share this news by using the Facebook "Share," Twitter "Tweet this," and Google+ "+1" buttons found at the bottom of this post.]

It's interesting to see two musicals about girls, created in London, catching buzz this year.

Viva Forever, a jukebox musical based on the songs of the Spice Girls.

From the award-winning writer and comedienne Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous, French & Saunders), and Judy Craymer, producer of the worldwide smash-hit musical "Mamma Mia!" (the musical based on the music of Abba), comes "Viva Forever!," a wonderfully joyous contemporary musical about the value of friendship in the face of fame and fortune.

As one girl follows her dreams, "Viva Forever!" charts her journey into the world of overnight celebrity and its impact on her mother, and the friends she thought she'd have forever. From London to Spain and back again, as the world judges you, it's all about who you really are and who you want to be, whatever the cost.

Spice up your life with this exhilarating and irresistibly funny tale of love, loyalty and romance. An original story of our times, inspired by the songs of the Spice Girls, "Viva Forever!" hits all the high notes for a fabulous feel-good night out.

The musical is scheduled to open at the West End's Piccadilly Theatre in December 2012

The Spice Girls are a British pop girl group formed in 1994 that have sold over 75 million records worldwide.  In December 2000, the group unofficially announced that they were beginning an indefinite hiatus.  They reunited in 2007 for a reunion concert tour.

Matilda, the Musical, based on the book of the same title by Roald Dahl.

Produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the production had its world premiere in 2010 and premiered in London's West End last year.  The show won seven 2012 Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical--the most awards ever won by a single show.

The show uses three teams of child performers.  The four children who play the title role won the 2012 Olivier award for Best Actress in Musical. (The children who played Billy Elliot in the musical shared the 2006 Best Actor in a Musical.)

The RSC has announced the show will transfer to Broadway in Spring 2013.

Roald Dahl's much-loved story bursts into life on stage in this musical version by Dennis Kelly and award-winning musician and comedian Tim Minchin. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

Earlier version of the poster during the
show's first run, using illustrations by
Quentin Blake, the illustrator of the book.
Directed by Matthew Warchus, designed by Rob Howell, choreography by Peter Darling, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, musical supervision and orchestration by Christopher Nightingale, sound by Simon Baker and special effects and illusions are by Paul Kieve.

The book was made into a movie in 1996 directed by Danny DeVito and starring Mara Wilson as Matilda.

Roald Dahl wrote one play, "The Honeys," which ran on Broadway in 1955. It starred Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, and Dorothy Stickney. The play is based on some of the stories from "Someone Like You" and revolves around two sisters who decide to murder their husbands.

The last big musical that RSC produced was "Les Misérables" by Claude-Michel Schoenberg and Alain Boublil directed by Trevor Nunn in 1985.

It also produced "Carrie: The Musical" adapted from Stephen King's novel "Carrie" in 1988, which was cited in Ken Mandelbaum's 1992 book "Not Since Carrie: Forty Years of Broadway Musical Flops."  Though "Carrie" has developed somewhat of a cult-following among campus productions and had a reworked version staged on Broadway earlier this year.

Yay! My article on the 2012 season line-up of  Philippine Drama Company  Sala Theater  was published in Philippine Daily Inquirer's July 2, 2012 issue.

Sala Theater celebrates founder Naty Crame Rogers’ 90th birthday
By Walter Ang

Rehearsals for Panhik Ligaw
Philippine Drama Company  Sala Theater’s (PDCST) 27th season will celebrate the 90th birthday of its founder and artistic director Natividad “Naty” Crame- Rogers.

The season opens with “kaSALAn,” a twin-bill of comedies “Panhik Ligaw” and “Dahil sa Anak” on July 7-8.

“Panhik Ligaw,” directed by Gaby Castillo, is D. Habito’s adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s “The Marriage Proposal.”

It features Entang, the comic maid of the wealthy Don Sebio, whose tough spinster daughter Talia is being wooed by Kadio, a sickly bachelor who has asthma.

“Dahil sa Anak,” by Julian Cruz Balmaceda and directed by Kenn Cayunda, is about the wealthy Don Arkimedes who is against his son Manuel’s marriage with Rita, a laundry woman’s daughter, despite them already having a child together. Manuel seeks help from his wise uncle Don Cristobal to sway his father’s decision, and from Rita’s strong-willed aunt, Aling Sidora.

The twinbill will be staged at Aming Tahanan Sala Theater, Rogers’ living room transformed into an informal performance area during productions.

In October, the group will stage National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin’s “Portrait of an Artist as Filipino,” about a pair of spinster sisters dealing with the changes in Old Manila just before World War II.

In December, the group will stage “Naty @ Ninety” to commemorate  Rogers’ continuing legacy to Philippine theater.

Rogers has been creating and teaching theater since her college days under National Artist for Theater Wilfrido Guerrero at University of the Philippines.  She taught at the Philippine Normal College (now Philippine Normal University) where she was part of National Artist for Theater Severino Montano’s Arena Theater. She founded PDCST after retiring from teaching.

Rogers has performed for National Artist for Theater Rolando Tinio’s Teatro Filipino and National  Artist for Film Lamberto Avellana’s Barangay Theater Guild.

Rogers wrote “Classical Forms of Theater in Asia,” published by UST Publishing House.

“kaSALAn” runs July 7-8, with shows at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., at the Aming Tahanan Sala Theater, 40 Stella Maris St., Bo. Kapitolyo, Pasig. Call 0917-5691439.

One of the very first plays I ever saw was Gantimpala's "El Filibusterismo" staged at the Metropolitan Theater in the mid '90s.  Since then, I've seen all four curriculum plays staged annually by the group.

The very first theater-related workshop I ever took was Gantimpala Theater's Stage Management and Teacher Training workshop in summer of 1999. My teachers were Ed Murillo and Ama Quiambao. Sir Tony monitored our progress and gave very insightful lectures.

Here is a statement from Theater Actors Guild:

TAG GRIEVES FOR TONY AND MARIO

Just as Tony Espejo was being laid to rest, Mario O’ Hara was breathing his last. In a week’s time, Philippine theater lost two of her most glorious sons.

We, members of the Philippine Theater Actors Guild, grieve.

Tony, through Bulwagang Gantimpala (later Gantimpala Theater Foundation), ushered in the flourishing of original Filipino plays in the 80s. Through its laboratory productions, Gantimpala in Tony’s guidance, discovered and nurtured the talents of many of today’s theater actors, directors and production staff.

Mario, on the other hand, was more popularly known for his achievements in film (as an actor in Lino Brocka’s Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang which Mario also wrote; and either as writer or director or both for films like Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, Insiang, Bulaklak ng city Jail , Babae sa Bubungang Lata, Babae sa Breakwater and Paglilitis kay Andres Bonifacio ) . But Mario was, and will always be the son of the theater. He lent and shared his talent as an actor to various theater companies --- PETA, Dulaang UP, and Tanghalang Pilipino among others.

At the time of his death, Mario was prepared to do his original musical , Stage Show, for Tanghalang Pilipino. Stage Show is the story of aging veterans of Filipino vaudeville caught between their love for the craft and economic survival. He did not live long enough to be physically present to pay tribute to a lost art.

Tony and Mario were icons of Philippine theater. Their deaths will leave a vacuum in the community of artists. We grieve, but in that grief is our vow to remember the shared stories with them, and pass it on to the new and the young that they ,too, may catch a glimpse of the passion and creative genius now gone.

With the death of Tony and Mario --- our seniors, mentors, colleague and friends ---- we can only commit to live up to the ideals of Philippine theater for which they lived.

Helsinki toast Candice Adea to open
Ballet Philippines' 43rd season

By Walter Ang

Adea and Cordero
Ballet Philippines opens its 43rd season with "Songs," a gala of masterworks featuring the work of international and Philippine choreographers on July 6-8 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo.

The season is dubbed "Dragon Song," inspired by this year being the Chinese year of the dragon.  "Dragon years are always significant with their great energy and sense of renewal, the beginning of a new cycle," says BP artistic director Paul Morales.

In "Songs," fresh from winning first place in the women's category of the 2012 Helsinki International Ballet Competition, one of the most prestigious ballet competitions in the world, principal dancer Candice Adea will perform in the world premiere of a new grand pas de deux choreographed by former BP artistic director Bam Damian.

The piece was specifically choreographed for Adea and her partner Jean Marc Cordero, who won a Special Jury Award for Best in Pas de Deux Technique at Helsinki.

The pair had performed another Damian piece, "Evacuation," winner of 2009 Philstage Gawad Buhay! Outstanding Choreography for Dance Production, at Helsinki as part of their competition repertoire.

Other works in "Songs" include a new piece by Morales and "Les Petit Mots d'Amour" by French choreographer Redha Beintefour, a piece that "embodies man's innermost desires."

Also included is "Moriones" by Agnes Locsin, inspired by the Moriones Festival of Marinduque and originally choreographed for BP2 (BP's junior corps)'s participation at Recontres Festival Du Danse in La Baule, France.

Alden Lugnasin choreopraphs "This is My Life," a solo contemporary piece highlighting the independence and elegance of women.

Line-up
Candice Adea
The rest of the season includes a reshuffling of BP's Neo-Filipino series from its usual February slot to September.  This year's Neo-Filipino is "Anting," where four noted Filipino choreographers will choreograph dramatist Tony Perez's libretto exploring the world of talismans and amulets of Filipino magical traditions.

In December, BP restages its pop ballet musical "Rama Hari," choreographed by BP founder Alice Reyes, with music by Ryan Cayabyab, and libretto by National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera.

Based on the Indian epic "Ramayana," the show premiered in 1980 with Basil Valdez as the prince Rama, Kuh Ledesma as Rama's wife Sita, and Leo Valdez as the villain Ravana.  The lead characters are dually portrayed by singers and BP dancers.

The season concludes in February 2013 with "A Midsummer Night's Dream," a new production of William Shakespeare's romantic comedy by award-winning Hong Kong-based choreographer Carlo Pacis.

Touring
Four BP touring productions are also available for booking.

Former BP artistic director Agnes Locsin's neo-ethnic ballet "Encantada," showcasing the mixture of paganism and Christianity set during the Spanish colonial era.

A one-hour version of former CCP Dance School principal Noordin Jumalon's "Nutcracker" featuring BP2 and BP Kidz (BP's children corps).

Paul Morales' "Crisostomo Ibarra," a contemporary ballet based on National Hero Jose Rizal's novel "Noli Me Tangere," focusing on vignettes of the novel that focus on Ibarra.

"Body Politix," a mixed bill of classical, neo-classical and contemporary works including "Shifting Wait" by Carlo Pacis, winner of 2010 Philstage Gawad Buhay! Outstanding Choreography for a Dance Production.

Season subscribers get preferred seating, a 20% discount on all tickets, a complimentary souvenir program per show.  Donations and sponsorships to BP are tax-deductible.
